Literature Text
I think of him like I think of the word synecdoche;
I can’t pronounce it, don’t understand it, forget it
until I hear a particular song, or until the light folds
just so across the window pane and it looks like
his smile.
(Encarta tells me synecdoche is where the word for
part of something is used to mean the whole and I
wonder which part was love and which part was
regret.)

just another poem about august
august walks in like something angry and something vivid. they’re here for the afterparty, for the graduation & the champagne that they couldn’t possibly afford that’s made of their dreams and their hopes. august sits on the table with their hands folding origami paper cranes of peace and their mouth the shape of rebirth. august talks like they know they could save lives, laughs like a fire engine, smiles like they’ve got a secret. when the sun goes down i think of them at the xray machine, pressing their hands against it because radiation passes right through them. i think of them with moths in their hair, with paint

memento
as i chain your ether
between what is surreal
and what is true
i will unravel you
like chiffon in remnants of
mother's pearl earrings and
chanel bottles of perfume
like father's aged black
leather box of dominoes and
snakes and ladders
you will hold a keepsake
of me, too

does she know the astrological significance
of the bruises starring along
your wrists? if I could, I’d
run away somewhere where
the sky is silent and the people
hate honest eyes. here’s my problem,
I’ve wasted all my time daydreaming
in the universe of your scars. I wonder
if substantiality is lethal.

[when will you move on
like you know what
you’re doing with your life,
like this tiny existential
failure is only a hazard sign
on the roadmap of your journey,
like the world weighing down
upon your shoulders is an
exercise in vanity and quietude
instead of someone
else’s burden?]

Great piece!! If you wanted to know it's pronounced: "si-nek-do-key" (I'm a bit of a pretentious snob for big words... :/)
Seriously though, love this piece.
